We used to have a lovely and beautiful English teacher who taught us before we departed for Australia. When asked how were our pronunciation, she found it hard to explain. Maybe she didn’t want to embarrass us. Or perhaps she tried to think of another way.
First, she asked us to teach her some Khmer starting with counting Khmer number, Mouy (1), Pbi (2), Bey (3), Baun (4)…..to Dop (ten). Then she counted them for us to listen and tell her how her pronunciation was.
We told her that was OK although they were not the exact way we used to say in everyday life. And also we told her we understood her. Interestingly, she replied “Well, your English are the same as my Khmer”.
